Emotional Intelligence (EI) - the ability to understand and manage your own and
others' emotions effectively - is an important factor in workplace, interpersonal
and leadership success. Team members with good EI skills often outperform their
peers with lower levels of EI.
But what happens when stress levels are high within a team or workplace? The behavior of
people with lower EI will begin to change right away, and even those who are normally strong
in EI will eventually notice an impact in their behavior when the stress level increases significantly.
At some point, stress will become too much for even the highest-EI leaders to handle. As a result, the ability to use EI skills will be hampered. This pattern can be seen time and again in high-stress work environments. But these negative impacts can be lessened or prevented with training and practice.
